Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer – and with that comes the official start of the busy road travel season. Keeping safety top of mind will help you start your road trip off right.

NHTSA’s new suite of consumer videos highlight important tips for getting road trip-ready this summer.

NHTSA’s full list of summer driving tips can be found here.

  • Perform a basic safety check – Be sure to check your vehicle’s tire pressure, wiper blades, fluid levels, lights and air conditioning before you hit the road.
  • Check for recalls – No matter the season use our VIN Look-up Tool at NHTSA.gov to make sure your vehicle is recall free.
  • Protect your passengers – Buckle up—every trip, every time. When traveling with a child, it’s safest for them to ride in a car seat suited for their size and age, and all children 13 and younger should ride in the back seat.
  • Stay alert – Plan enough time to stop along the way to take a group stretch, get something to eat and drink, return any calls or text messages, and change drivers if you're feeling tired or drowsy.
